1851 Census
This census was taken on the night of 30/31st March 1851. The completed collection contains detailed information on each individual who spent the night in individual households including name, relationship to the head of the family, marital status, age at last birthday, gender, occupation, and birthplace. Additional information about the dwelling and property was also collected.
All the details from the individual forms were copied into The Census books, which are the original records we can view as images.
This information is invaluable to us in building a picture of the lives of our antecedents, but there are things to be wary of: the enumerator may have miscopied the spellings of names, or they may have been misspelt by the householder; the writing is sometimes difficult to decipher; names are sometimes written in full, other times shortened, alternative spellings used, second names written in full or as initials, and the order of multiple forenames are sometimes altered.
A slash / indicates the end of each household in a building.

1911 Census
The 1911 Census of England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man was taken on the nights of 2nd and 3rd April 1911. It collected detailed information on the people who spent the night in each household, including their names, marital statuses, ages, occupations and birthplaces. Also for the first time are nationality, duration of current marriage, number of children born within that marriage, number of living children and the number of any children who had died. Extra occupation information may show details of the industry in which they worked.
These forms filled in by householders were bound into Census books. This Census is thus unique, as you can view the original household schedules your ancestors filled in. That means you can read their details in their own handwriting, and often see extra comments they added.
