George William was probably born in February 1825 in Whitechapel. We have a baptism record for 14th Feb 1825. In this record his parents are listed as George and Ann, labourers of Finch Street. ch
He married Mary Lewis on 30th August 1846 in St John the Baptist parish church, Hoxton, he was a “horsehair manufacturer” and lived in Cross Street. His father, George, listed as a smith, was deceased. mc(1)
Horsehair was a readily available material at this time and was used for many items. Horsehair curlers prepared horsehair for upholstery stuffing; it was woven, often with linen or cotton to make a beautiful, hardwearing fabric; it was braided and used to make and decorate bonnets; and it was even used to make sieves for flour.
He was present at the marriage of his daughter Mary to David Waghorn in May 1874, which took place in Bethnal Green. mc(2)
We can find no record of his death.
